Last week International Business Times reported that China Unicom, the nation’s second largest cell phone provider, had purchased 5 million Apple iPhone for $1.5 billion set the rumour mills into over-drive. Speculation had placed an official iPhone launch in China as soon as September. On Monday, August 17, Channel Web reported:

China’s second largest wireless carrier, China Unicom, denied reports that it will launch the Apple iPhone in China next month, noting that it is still in discussions with Apple to bring the now-iconic smartphone to China.

Meanwhile, Dell seemed to confirmed the year-long speculation that it’ll enter the smartphone market by being one of the presenting partners during China Mobile’s new mobile platform introduction. Furthermore it also confirmed it is working with China Mobile on a cell phone as reported by PC World

[...] Dell said that it has only confirmed that it is working with China Mobile on a cell phone.

Dell did show off some device prototypes, but did not make any announcements about form factors or when it might introduce a phone, said Andrew Bowins, a spokesman for Dell.

The computer maker supports China Mobile’s Ophone development, which is an open mobile software platform for mobile Internet, Dell said. The company declined to say which operating system its phone would use.

CNet reported that Dell spokesman, Matt Parretta, said:

Dell was there supporting China Mobile as a development partner. We did not confirm or announce anything.

Matt Parretta also said:
