LG Canadian Texting Championship

Last summer LG Mobile organized Texting Championship competitions throughout the world to determine national champions who would later compete for the world crown. This contest, the LG Mobile World Cup, took place Thursday, January 14, 2010, in Manhattan, New York. There were 13 two-member teams in the competition. They competed not only for the world title but also for prize money as well. The top prize is US$100,000. The second place finishers win US$20,000; while the no. 3 team gets to take home US$10,000.

The competitors went through five rounds of intense team and individual events. All contestants text in their native language the words on a monitor without mistakes or abbreviations. All texting was done using two of LG’s current mobile phones – the LG BL20, which has a numeric keypad, and the LG GW520, which features a QWERTY keyboard.

After all the pixels had settled Bae Yeong-Ho, 18, and Ha Mok-Min, 17, of South Korea were the top finishers and winners of the US$100,000. Associated Press reported that Bae Yeong-Ho said he will use his $50,000 share of the prize to study to become an opera singer.

Second place finishers were Morgan Dynda and Kate Moore from the United States and Juan Ignacio Aufranc and Agustina Montegna from Argentina took third place.

In addition to the main competition, the players attempted to set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest texting, using the LG enV3 handset. Pedro Matias, 27, from Portugal set a new record by typing a 264-character text in just 1 minute 59 seconds, shaving 23 seconds off the previous record set by Finland’s Arttu Harkki in 2005.
