Straight No Chaser (SNC) a student a cappella group that was formed in 1996 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, have a five-album record deal with Atlantic Records.
In April 2006, an old 1998 SNC recording of “The 12 Days of Christmas,” uploaded to YouTube by SNC member Randy Stine, was viewed by about 10 million people including the chairman and CEO of Atlantic Records, Craig Kallman, who arranged the recording deal. Craig Kallman offered the original group a five-album deal based upon the success of the YouTube videos.
The original 10 members of SNC remained together from 1996 until 1999. New students replaced graduating members, and as of 2009, approximately 50 students have been members of Straight No Chaser.
In July 2008, eight of the original 1996-1999 SNC members – Dan Ponce, Randy Stine, Charlie Mechling, Steve Morgan, Jerome Collins, Dave Roberts, Walter Chase, and Mike Itkoff – along with two 2000-2003 SNC members – Mike Luginbill and Ryan Ahlwardt – recorded their first Christmas album, Holiday Spirits. Prior to its release, Holiday Spirits was Atlantic Records third-best pre-selling album ever. After SNC performed on several Christmas television specials, Holiday Spirits became the #1 selling album on both the iTunes and Amazon.com charts.
In August 2009, SNC members Michael Itkoff and Steve Morgan had decided to step down from the group to spend more time with their families. They were replaced by former SNC members Seggie Isho and Tyler Trepp.
In August 2009, Straight No Chaser released an EP of six songs, titled Six Pack. SNC released their second Christmas album, Christmas Cheers, in November 2009. The group are also working on a non-Christmas album for release in 2010.
