Google to lay ocean floor cable in southeast Asia

Google in its quest for ever more bandwidth to carry its Internet search results, YouTube videos and the accompanying advertisements will lay down more than 8,300 km of undersea fiber optic cables in the southern Pacific. It will link Singapore and Japan directly, with initial branching connectivity to Indonesia, the Philippines, Guam, and Hong Kong. The network- having the capacity to carry 17 terabits per second (Tbps), upgradeable to 23 Tbps – will be the world’s highest capacity cable.

For this project, named the Southeast Asia Japan Cable (SJC), Google has partnered with Bharti Airtel Limited of India, Globe Telecom Inc. of the Philippines, KDDI Corporation of Japan, Reliance Globalcom, a division of Reliance Communications Ltd. of India, and Telemedia Pacific Inc., a subsidiary of Telemedia Pacific Group of Singapore.

It is expected that they will start laying the Southeast Asia Japan Cable (SJC) in 2010 and be ready for use by 2012. Once completed, it will not only provide Internet users across the region with much higher speeds and lower costs but will also create some critical redundancies in case of communication disruptions, whether from natural or man-made sources.

Meanwhile, in early December, Google CEO Eric Schmidt made the news headlines on another front. His comments while appearing on CNBC drew the ire of internet privacy advocates and other concerned citizens.

What did Eric Schmidt say? Here it is:

“I think judgment matters. If you have something that you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place. If you really need that kind of privacy, the reality is that search engines–including Google–do retain this information for some time and it’s important, for example, that we are all subject in the United States to the Patriot Act and it is possible that all that information could be made available to the authorities.”

Asa Dotzler, Mozilla Director of Community Development, not only suggested but showed users how one can easily switch Firefox’s search engine from Google to Bing. This is very interesting given that the lion’s share of Mozilla’s revenue comes from the Google traffic generated from Mozilla’s search bar.
