Be amazed! Deep within the dark ocean depths are bizarre and odd-shaped deep-sea creatures that were discovered during the ten-year Census of Marine Life, which ends in 2010.

The Census of Marine Life is a global international network of over 2,000 researchers in more than 82 countries engaged in a 10-year scientific initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution and abundance of marine life in the global oceans. The results of the Census will be announced in London next October 2010. The following video show some of the weird-looking sea animals they have found thus far. Although the current number of known marine species is estimated at 230,000, scientists believe there could be as many as three times this number of species undiscovered and yet to be named. Since scientists thus far have explored less than 5 percent of the global oceans, we know so little of that underwater world. Scientists say the total number of marine species in the Earth’s oceans could surpass one million or more. Video Courtesy: Census of Marine Life. Take a look at these weird sea creatures:

  • Piglet Squid
  • Helmet Jelly
  • Sea Angel
  • Football Octopod
  • Jewel Squid
  • Northern Comb Jelly
  • Salp
  • Atolla
  • Amphipod
  • Swallower
  • Loose Jaw
  • Snake Pipefish
