Singapore Airlines named Airline of the Year

The end of the year means annual award time. The Official Airline Guide (OAG), the London-based aviation information company, announced the Airline Industry Awards. To nobody’s surprise Singapore Airlines once again walks away with the Airline of the Year award.
The top award winners by category for 2009 are:
Airline of the Year: Singapore Airlines
Best Trans-Atlantic Airline: Virgin Atlantic
Best Trans-Pacific Airline: Singapore Airlines
Best International First Class: Singapore Airlines
Best Business Class: Continental Airlines
Best Economy/Coach Class: British Airways
Best Airline Based in North America: Continental Airlines
Best Low-Cost Airline: Southwest Airlines
Best Airline Based in Western Europe: Virgin Atlantic
Best Airline Based in Central/Eastern Europe: CSA Czech Airlines
Best Airline Based in Pacific/Australia: Qantas
Best Airport: Singapore Changi
OAG isn’t the only travel-related organization giving out such awards. Skytrax, which claims to survey more people than anyone else, is known for its World Airline Awards. Here is Skytrax’s top 10 airlines of 2008 and their respective ranking in 2007:
| 2008 | Airline | 2007 |
| 1 | Singapore Airlines | 1 |
| 2 | Cathay Pacific | 3 |
| 3 | Qantas | 5 |
| 4 | Thai Airways | 2 |
| 5 | Asiana Airlines | 12 |
| 6 | Malaysia Airlines | 6 |
| 7 | Qatar Airways | 4 |
| 8 | Air New Zealand | 7 |
| 9 | Emirates | 9 |
| 10 | Etihad Airways | 2 |
For both organizations, all votes were made on-line and tabulated. For year 2009, the Asian airlines are considered to deliver the best service. This is reflected in the voting results.
It comes as little surprise that U.S.-based carriers aren’t very highly regarded for service, especially with the domestic airline industry in such turmoil these days. Many surveys in recent years show a preference for European over American carriers when it comes to in-flight service across the Atlantic.
