Obama embarks on Asian tour (13 Nov 09) – video news report
Al Jazeera’s senior Washington correspondent Rob Reynolds looks at U.S. President Obama’s Asian agenda.
Barack Obama has embarked on his first visit to Asia since taking office as U.S. president in January, but he has a unique familiarity with the region having spent part of his boyhood in Indonesia.
The four-nation tour, taking him to Japan first, then to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Singapore, next stop is China, and South Korea, is intended to strengthen some important alliances and may also bring him into contact with senior officials from Myanmar’s military government.
Reynolds reports: “The centerpiece of Obama’s trip will be several days spent in China where he’ll discuss climate change, energy and North Korea. Dealing effectively with China’s emergence as a rising global power and its influence in the Pacific Rim is a key challenge for American foreign policy.”
Obama ends his Asian tour with a visit to South Korea, where North Korea and its nuclear weapons will be front and center.
