A Remembrance Day Message from Space: Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk thanks veterans
Canadian Astronaut Robert Thirsk, currently aboard the International Space Station, recorded a video message from space, sharing his observations about Canadian John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields” and thanking Canada’s war veterans and the men and women serving with the Canadian Forces in this November 11 Remembrance Day message.

Veterans Affairs Canada launched a channel called Canada Remembers on the video-sharing site YouTube to highlight the accomplishments of Canada’s war veterans and to bring the message to the Internet generation and Canada’s youth of the importance of November 11 Remembrance Day.
The federal government channel says: “This November, Canadians from coast to coast to coast will come together to mark Veterans’ Week. At hundreds of ceremonies and events, we will remember and recognize the sacrifices and accomplishments of our veterans those of past missions and conflicts, and those who are still returning home today. So, how will you remember?”
Veterans Affairs Canada is inviting people to share and view any photos, comments and posts, to upload videos or to join them on Facebook where people will find the tools to organize and promote events in their communities . . . to “share virtual poppies” during Veterans’ Week November 5 to 11.
Spokesperson Heather MacDonald for Veterans Affairs report that the response has been overwhelming, that they had no idea it would take off as it has. People and the veterans themselves have been finding the Canada Remembers channel and the Facebook page by the same name with little promotion by Veterans Affairs. Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk, currently aboard the International Space Station, did just that. He found the Canada Remembers group on his own and recorded his video from space.
