Phillies “2009 World Series Champ” jerseys to aid families in need

The New York Yankees may have won this year’s World Series but some kids in Indonesia will be proudly wearing jerseys, caps, and jackets proclaiming the losing team, the Philadelphia Phillies, as the 2009 World Series Champions. No, it is not a mistake of some counterfeiters. These are Major League Baseball (MLB) licensed products.
Major League Baseball, wanting to capitalize on the fans’ desire to celebrate their team’s win with the immediate purchase of team-event-related souvenirs, produces shirts and other items listing both teams as winners in advance to be prepared for whatever the outcome of the World Series is. This means there is always a surplus of the losing team merchandise.
MLB, this year as in the previous two years, will donate these unsaleable merchandise to World Vision for distribution to children and families in need around the world.
MLB had already donated 1,300 pieces of apparel with the names Angels and Dodgers. Both are losers of the American and National League championship series.
In the past, donations of postseason apparel have gone to Ghana, Zambia, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Romania. This year, World Vision is aiding earthquake-ravaged Indonesia
