Japan’s First Lady receives Best Jeanist Award

Any lingering doubt that celebrity politics has arrived in Japan was shattered on Monday, October 19 when Miyuki Hatoyama, the country’s first lady, won one of the annual Best Jeanist Awards given by Japan Jeans Association. This marked the first time the country’s first spouse has won the award.
Miyuki Hatoyama (鳩山幸) won for looking good — in her jeans. The Japan Jeans Association said she won for wearing jeans gracefully, with a bit of a revolutionary touch. The Japan Jeans Association represents denim importers and manufacturers.
She has this to say about her win, “I have long wished to win the prize, as I’m a big fan of jeans.”
On the attire of her husband, Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, she said, “I’ve been encouraging him to wear jeans more often when he can be casual.”
The other winners are four Japanese musicians and a Taiwanese actor:
- Kazuya Kamenashi (亀梨 和也), musician
- Koda Kumi (倖田 來未), musician
- Speed, musician
- Daigo, musician
- Jerry Yan (言承旭), actor/musician
The award winners are the result of online votings conducted at Best-Jeans.com.
