A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Taiwan early Sunday morning as the island was preparing for the imminent arrival of Typhoon Parma. Taiwan officials said no damage has been reported so far.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau put the magnitude at 6.3 on the Richter scale, and the U.S. Geological Survey said the size of the tremor was 6.1, after first gauging it at 6.2. Japanese seismologists measured the quake at 6.3.

U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 1:36 a.m. on Sunday, was centered about 29 kilometres south of Hualien, which is located on the east coast of Taiwan.

It was strong enough to wake people in the capital Taipei.

Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Pacific basin.

The watch for Typhoon Parma continues as it battered northern Philippines on Saturday. Expectation is for it to make landfall on southern Taiwan before the weekend is over.

The Central News Agency reported Saturday that villages in Parma’s path were being evacuated, particularly in mountain areas prone to landslides.
